Since early 2010 we have been very pleased to donate 5% of our net profits to help Calcutta Rescue - a charity based in the city of Kolkata where our jute bags are manufactured. Kolkata (formerly called Calcutta) is truly mesmerising, full of the sights, sounds and smells that only an Indian city can produce. However, the size of the population, which is ever-increasing, puts a huge strain on the infrastructure which leads to many people having no support network.
Calcutta Rescue is a registered charity that works to make life better for people living in the slums and on the streets of Kolkata. It provides free medical care for poor and destitute people suffering from tuberculosis, leprosy, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS, infections and other life-threatening conditions. It offers maternity care to pregnant women and special feeding for malnourished babies. Calcutta Rescue also provides free education for children from the ten poorest slums, and skills training to enable poor people to become self-reliant. The charity is staffed mainly by volunteers which means that almost every penny that is donated has a direct, positive effect in the city.

In 2011 we had the privilege of spending a day with Calcutta Rescue visiting several of their clinics and schools.
