The Natural Bag Company was started by Simon Pritchard in 2005, following a long family tradition in jute and is based in Dundee, a city famous for its jute heritage.
Back in 1911, Dundee was world famous for jute production and known as Juteopolis, with dozens of mills across the city. Simon’s great grandfather, J Mackenzie Stewart, began the family’s long connection with jute at that time by importing raw jute for the Dundee mills. The business continued under the leadership of Simon’s grandfather from the 1940s through to the late 1980s.
Simon joined the business in 1983, learning the jute trade through spending time working in jute mills in Bangladesh. As the traditional main jute products of twine and gunny sacks were being replaced with synthetic alternatives towards the end of the 1990s, Simon looked for a different emphasis for this fantastic material. And so he started The Natural Bag Company supplying high quality, ethically sourced jute bags from India to the UK market.
